Covid-19 would seem to be higher in the North of the country, with 40 deaths being reported. There are no cases reported at Chez Papa Geoff orphanage (CPG) at this time.
Chez Papa Geoff now has 23 children accommodated, 1 short of full capacity. New out buildings and a separate room for study has been constructed. One of the young people has damaged his leg but after a few visits to the hospital he is improving. All the children are doing well and 3 of the children are now being sponsored at a school where class sizes are smaller and they will receive extra help as they have fallen behind with their French. 4 of the children will be going on to secondary school this term.
Education
There are now 12 young people being supported at University with a range of subjects from Maths, History, Geography and Journalism. With 9 young people in Apprenticeships in diverse skills from Tiling, Glazing, Hairdressing and Dress Making.
A total of 98 children will be supported in Secondary Education in the 2020-21 academic year. Report cards are a bit slow coming to us due to all the disruption, however the last reports were particularly good with a 92% pass rate.
Harvest
The harvest this year was much improved with better land management systems in place. This is good news for the range of food available to the children at the orphanage and a cash crop to be used to support the Chez Papa Geoff.
Contact
Due to travel restriction we are unable to plan a visit to Benin. However, we are able to talk directly to the local manager via WhatsApp. This is helping us resolve issues that may arise and support the local team.
