This project will provide emotional and practical support to 1,000 siblings who have a disabled brother or sister. While support programs and services have been developed for individuals with I/ DD and their parents, supports for siblings have been limited.
Siblings often have the longest-lasting familial relations. We envision a world that enables siblings of disabled individuals the support to grow up and become healthy, resilient and compassionate adults. Even though siblings have unique roles and are likely future caregivers, the needs and perspectives of siblings are often overlooked.
Special Needs Siblings provides Toy Boxes for siblings caring for a disabled brother or sister and connects them with resources in their community. Sibshops provide young brothers and sisters with peer support and information in a lively, recreational setting.
This project will ensure siblings emotional and mental health is protected. Siblings connect with each other and create a stronger supported community avoiding isolation. As an organization we support over 500 siblings annually.
