The Rwanda Down Syndrome Organisation has found a partner who will offer them a free office space from the beginning of January. This is a great step forwards for the organisation, allowing them to reallocate funds towards expanding their activities supporting people with Down syndrome in the country. We are supporting them to plan strategically for how best to do this over the next year.
The Down's Syndrome Foundation of Zambia have recently moved their office to Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. This will allow them to develop their links with government and other organisations working in Zambia. They have been developing a partnership with the Ministry of Health and are hoping to sign a Memorandum of Understanding soon.
In Uganda we have made progress with arranging treatment for two children with Down syndrome with serious heart conditions. This was very urgent as in Uganda some children with Down syndrome die each year as they cannot access heart surgery. We are working to develop longer term solutions to the problem of children with Down syndrome being unable to access heart surgery.
2017 has been a great year for our organisations in Africa – they have made great progress in a number of areas including health, education and self-advocacy. Thank you for helping us to make this happen, we are optimistic that next year we will progress even further!
