Many communities around the world hope to develop language revitalization materials but cannot access resources or financial support for this work. The 7000 Languages' Fellowship program provides individuals a chance to develop skills, establish collaborative partnerships, and financial support as they take on the vital work of generating language learning materials in their endangered language. By supporting a fellow, you can support a community's language revitalization goals!
There are approximately 7000 Languages spoken in the world today, however the majority of these languages are losing speakers regularly. Some estimates indicate that we lose the last speakers of a language every two weeks. With the loss of linguistic diversity comes the loss of a specific worldview and perspective of humanity as well as vital knowledge about our world. Without action, our world will lose access to libraries of knowledge and culture that fill the pages of the human story.
7000 Languages' Fellowship provides specialized training for individuals collaborating with communities on language revitalization projects around the world. With this training and support, fellows are tasked with building digital resources for their partnered endangered language that can be utilized in language revitalization programs, schools, and other community-led efforts to maintain and grow the speaker population, ensuring that languages continue to thrive for years to come.
$5000 is the approximate cost to support 1 Fellow over a single cohort year. With this support, a fellow will learn vital skills and methodology for language revitalization and the finances needed to dedicate their time and energy on generating high quality language content in an endangered language that desperately needs it. With the skills and expertise developed, this fellow will be able to continue creating language materials in their community, leading change for many years to come.
