Fall 2017

kinderhände – children’s hands

After the summer, we started the new semester with our “Parent-Children-Café” every Monday in September. This is an open platform for beginners who want to get to now us, for pros who want to practice or learn more signs. It is also a good opportunity for exchange and asking questions since the cafés are visited by Deaf and hearing parents and guided by a Deaf/hearing team.

In the same month, we also had two big events. First, on September 25th we invited everybody to an open house to our kinderhände Center, celebrating our 11th anniversary of kinderhände as well as 1 year kinderhände in Mariahilf (6th district in Vienna). Old friends, new learners, supporters of kinderhände as well as the borough mayor of Mariahilf celebrated with us.

One day later, Europe celebrated the “Day of languages” with various events across Europe. For years we are part of this day offering various activities. This year we cooperated with the main library of Vienna and the company equalizent and offered workshops for the small visitors. The whole afternoon we sang and signed children’s songs and the children get to know new signs and a new language.

Finally, on October 3rd we started our semester with ten classes which are fully booked. In November there will be two additional workshops for kids – age 6 to 14 - who want to sign a whole day on the weekend.

Speaking of weekend, just last Saturday, October 14t, we participated at the 1. Deaf Fair in Salzburg. According to the organizers around 500 people from Austria and Germany visited the fair. This is a huge success and was a good possibility to advertise kinderhände in other states of Austria.

What is next? We have already started the preparation for our annual Christmas choir. Around 60 children from three different schools and one bilingual kindergarden will rehearse 8 Christmas songs together and perform them on December 4th at the Christmas market Schloss Schönbrunn.

Thank you for your support!
