Global Giving Report

Winter/Spring 2017

kinderhände – children’s hands

The second half of the kinderhaende year 2016 in the new location can be characterized by visibility and promotion. Since the new home of the kinderhaende center is in the basement, we are more visible and thus attract more walk-in customers and neighbors to stop by, ask about our work, see us sign, get to know us, buy our products or join a course. While the regular course semester was running, we also had a lot of medial attention. The association was portrayed on national TV (ORF), as well as on National radio (Radio Wien).

In November a camera team visited one of our courses and interviewed some of the parents, kids, trainers and the two founders of kinderhaende, Barbara Schuster and Andrea Rohrauer. The outcome was a piece on National TV ORF Wien Heute (November 28th 2016) and National radio (Decemer 7th, Radio Wien). The two founders were also invited to the live broadcast “Guten Morgen Österreich” (Good Morning Austria) on November 24th 2016 where they presented the vision and work of kinderhaende as well as sang together with Deaf and hearing children Christmas songs in spoken German and Austrian sign language (OeGS).

Singing songs with your hands was a further focus last Winter, with two main events: a) On November 27th we had the second kinderhaende concert with the two famous singers Klaus Trabitsch und Birgit Denk & band at the Haus der Musik (House of Music) in the 1st district of Vienna. b) After rehearsing during the fall, our kinderhaende choir with about 45 Deaf and hearing kids (4 – 15 years) had its performance at the Christmas market in front of the Schloss Schoenbrunn (Vienna) on December 4th 2016. They sang and signed together seven Christmas songs in front of a huge and interested audience. Both events showed once again, how the Deaf and hearing world can be combined and how important it is to have fully access to a language and communication.

The medial presence and the feedback gave us a boost for 2017 and we are positive that we are able to support more Deaf children and their families in their communication. We also want to take the opportunity to thank all donors who have support kinderhaende. THANK YOU!
