Pwani Youth Network Clean up Report

By Alfred Sigo | CEO Pwani Youth Network

On December 16, 2023, the community of Bangladesh, Mombasa, actively participated in World Cleanup Day, a global initiative promoting community engagement and environmental conservation. This year's theme, "The world is set by your example, not your opinion," inspired a diverse group of stakeholders, including VSO, CMA-CGM, Mizizi Youth Initiative, Aga Khan Foundation, Schools2030, and others. This report focuses on the additional activities carried out during the event, specifically plastic recycling and cultural engagement.

Event Overview

Following the successful cleanup of the beach and mangrove planting along Tudor Creek, participants transitioned to the next phase of the event. This phase centred on plastic recycling and cultural engagement, demonstrating the importance of responsible waste management and the cultural richness of the community.

Plastic Recycling

Participants gathered at a designated recycling center where they learned about the significance of recycling plastic waste. Experts from local recycling organizations were present to provide guidance and share insights into the recycling process. The participants were encouraged to segregate plastic waste collected earlier during the beach cleanup into different categories such as bottles, containers, and packaging materials.

Working together, they sorted and prepared the collected plastics for recycling. This hands-on experience helped raise awareness about the environmental benefits of recycling and the potential economic opportunities it presents. It was heartening to witness community members actively participating in this phase, underscoring their commitment to sustainable practices.

Cultural Engagement

Simultaneously, a cultural engagement program was organized to celebrate the diversity and rich heritage of Bangladesh, Mombasa. Local artisans and performers showcased traditional music, dance, and crafts, providing insight into the vibrant culture of the community. This segment of the event aimed to foster a sense of pride in cultural roots while promoting cross-cultural understanding among participants from different backgrounds.

Culturally responsive books and artefacts were displayed in a designated area to educate participants about the community's heritage and its connection to environmental stewardship. This initiative encouraged attendees to appreciate the cultural aspects of sustainability and environmental conservation.

Conclusion

The World Cleanup Day 2023 event in Bangladesh, Mombasa, was a testament to the power of community involvement and environmental consciousness. Participants, including stakeholders, local schools, volunteers, and community members, united to make a meaningful impact on their environment.

The plastic recycling and cultural engagement activities complemented the beach cleanup and mangrove planting efforts, emphasizing the holistic approach to environmental conservation. Challenges were met with resilience, and the commitment of all involved ensured the success of the event.

As participants came together to recycle plastics and celebrate their cultural heritage, the message was clear: through collective action, we set an example and reaffirm our dedication to a cleaner, more sustainable world that values both its environment and its rich cultural diversity.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, organizers, and partners who contributed to the success of this event, demonstrating that actions indeed speak louder than words when it comes to building a brighter future for our community and our planet.
