Farmers, the food producers are victims of perpetual agrarian crisis. Widows become farmers when husbands commit suicides, forced to shoulder family responsibilities to take care of children education, aged family members and survive in farming. In addition gender discrimination and sexual abuse is facing very often. FIAN empower and council widow farmers community to rehabilitate , face challenges and stand on their own in finding livelihood and compensation from the Government.
In India, 1998 to 2018 it has resulted in the suicides of 300000 farmers; widows and children left to pay off debts and societal stigma after the death of their husbands. Most of the women find work as laborers for a daily wage of around $2. The work is available two or three days a week. Hundreds of widows facing the brunt of the severe drought that has perished their lives. Married at a younger age, these women neither have access to education nor finances. women children are in risk.
FIAN gives moral support and confidence to continue farming and rehabilitate widow families The women farmers are entitled to get compensation who ever commit suicide due to agrarian crisis. Team support the family and take them to the government authorities to submit all the require documents to get the compensation so that the family will continue farming; FIAN facilitate to get technical knowledge on crops, water sources, continuing children education which gives self dignity, sustainability
Project gives an opportunity for these abandoned widows and their children to get rehabilitated & join in mainstreamed society with capacities. All the 100 families feel so strong and stand to improve children lives, acquiring knowledge to fight for their entitlements. FIAN do interventions with the policy makers on agrarian crisis to avoid farmers suicides in future. In long term, Government frame new agrarian policies and modify existing policies towards sustainable agriculture..
