Elimu Community Light (ECOLI) plans to provide 200 desks to 10 pre-primary classrooms at five public pre-primary schools in Arusha city council. This project intends to provide new designed desks that support play based approach to 1200 children and increased their learning opportunity for mastering pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-arithmetic skills before they entering grade one.
From 2015 pre-primary education in Tanzania has become compulsory as the result that public pre-primary classrooms are overcrowded. To most schools teacher pupils ration is 1:100. In other hand these classrooms lack appropriate desks to young children which increasing learning difficulties to them. This project will provide 200 desks that support play based approach and enable 1200 children to access friendly teaching and learning environment at 5 public pre-primary schools in Arusha Tanzania.
Elimu Community Light has designed a desk that can be used for both desk and table which also can accommodate 3 or 6 children at a time. This desk allows children to learn in participatory ways; supports uses of teaching and learning materials; and increase learning space. By providing these desks, the teaching and learning processes will become funny and enjoyable to teachers and children hence enabled children mastering basic literacy skills include pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-arithmetic.
The project will offer pre-primary education to 1200 children annually and prepare them for transition to primary school education. Children accessed pre-primary education will have big chance in mastering early literacy and numeracy skills; performing well academically, and increased their opportunities to pursue further education, become educated and productive citizens.
