The second harvest and hive inspections !

By Sandy Mermod | Program Manager

The youth group did their second harvest in June 2025. They processed it with the machines of the cooperative Nyuki Mlele and were able to produce 30 liters of honey and 4 kg de bee wax, of which they made candles. They sold their products at the Nyuki Mlele shop and at a fair organized in July 2025 in the Mlele District to promote local products and celebrate the day of the current President, Samia Hassan.

In August 2025, some of the youth conducted hive inspections to determine their colonization by bees. Mauku site has a total of 40 hives, with 15 hives with a colony and 25 without. At Maili site, there are 48 hives in total. 17 had colonies and 31 did not. The team found that some hives were too close to each other, and the water and fodder were not sufficient. They also found that some colonies left because of the presence of varroa and other parasites. Thus, the team decided to change the location of some hives to be closer to water and to put some grease on the wire to prevent insects entering the hives.

Early October 2025, the youth group had the opportunity to present their initiatives to the team of Viumbe Hai of AZAM TV, a local TV set that is focused on conservation initiatives in Tanzania. It should be broadcast in November or December 2025. The youth showcased the processing of honey and the making of candles.

About agroforestry program, the project didn’t implement any activity because it was the dry season. The trees that were planted during the previous quarter are under the supervision of the school and the district authorities and they oversaw watering them and protecting them from being grazed by livestock. The activities will resume next rainy season if enough funds are raised because the priority goes to the 30 youth in order to be able to strengthen their capacities and launch their business for a greater impact.
