Challenge

The Katavi region in Tanzania faces rapid population growth, fueled by internal migration, which puts significant pressure on forests. The Mlele District population tripled between 2002 and 2017, leading to deforestation, illegal settlements, and conflicts between farmers and pastoralists.Recent migrants practice unsustainable activities like charcoal production, threatening the ecosystem.Youth face limited opportunities, pushing them toward environmentally damaging livelihoods.

Solution

This project supports youth facing school failure by training them in sustainable beekeeping, providing skills to build and manage hives, and produce marketable products like honey, candles and lotions.Another part of the project is environmental education and agroforestry programs in schools. It involves reforesting degraded areas and planting fruit and nitrogen-fixing trees. The initiative engages communities, including eco-guards, in nursery management and reforestation.

Long-Term Impact

The project will empower local youth with sustainable income opportunities, reducing reliance on harmful activities like charcoal production.Reforestation and agroforestry will restore degraded lands, enhance biodiversity, and improve soil health.Schools will become hubs of environmental awareness, fostering future generations of conservation-minded citizens.Community collaboration will strengthen cohesion, reduce conflicts, and ensure the preservation of vital ecosystems in the Mlele District.
