Youth Defender's Work: flourishing
From the “Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Francisco de Vitoria O.P., A.C we are very grateful for the support of our work with the young defenders so that with a lot of love and tender we want to share with you the activities that we have done in the last months, which fill us of emotion and energy to continue working for the pursuit of another possibles worlds. In this month we continued accompanying 32 young defenders through a process of political formation called “La Escuelita del Centro Vitoria” based on popular education as a tool for emancipation and freedom for the defense of the human dignity. Through thematic sessions, the youth is willing to appropriate of tools for the construction of hopeful horizons that can put dignity in the center of their accompaniments.
Furthermore, in the framework of the 20th anniversary of La Escuelita we have carried out a virtual dialogue called “La educación popular como apuesta emancipadora” and we have carried out a face to face meetings with the members of “La Escuelita” of all generations. Trought activities and workshops we dialogued and reflected on the fights and the women’s rights, as well as the tools of security and integral protection for human rights defenders. The pursuit of truth and justice in the women’s agenda is urgent, so that we have continued to provide advices, legal representation and psicosocial accompaniment to women that have been victims of gender-based violence. Indeed, we improved advocacy actions and self-care actions in order to share tools for the listener and the accompaniment form the care and sorority. Also, we launched differents digital materials in order to inform about the actions to attend victims and improve the damage repair for girls and women that have suffered gender-based violence.
As part of the Institutional Strengthening, we are excited to receive young people in our “Semillero” a program of "Youth Defenders and Promoters of Human Rights" in the modalities of social service, professional practices and voluntary actions, who from their different experiences and contexts contribute to the construction and collective transformation by accompanying the various processes of various social sectors that have historically been violated. Similarly, like every month, the Book Club is open to all those interested in discussing and reflecting on the struggle for human rights from other forms, such as literature and poetry. In addition, seasonal workshops were institutionalized, which seek to socialize knowledge and strengthen ties between the youth defenders that make up our extensive team, with the summer workshops being their first cycle and which will continue to be carried out season after season.
Within the framework of International Youth Day, from the CDH Vitoria we carry out a series of actions to make visible the contexts faced by young human rights defenders, who have historically been victims of criminalization and stigmatization derived from their work. For this reason, an investigation was carried out to find out the names and stories of the youth defenders who have been murdered from 2005 to the present day, throughout the country. Also, with the intention of making visible and problematizing the human rights crisis that young people are going through from their different spaces, we facilitated three thematic talks around the defense of food sovereignty from the youth, the defense of rights from the dissident youth and the defense of the territory from the intergenerational dialogue, contributing to the reflections on the question: what is the role of youth in the various struggles and the challenges they face? We believe it is essential to continue rethinking and discussing the contexts and realities that youth experience from their position as young people and human rights defenders.
Thank you very much for continuing to accompany us on this path, which although there is still a long way to go, we are convinced to continue contributing to a transformation from the community and solidarity.
Best Regards.
