Recovery is Slow

By Heather MacCleoud | Executive Director & CEO

Our current scholarship recipients continue to deal with the after-effects from COVID-19.

Transportation, unemployment, and discrimination continue to be major issues. Conflict as a result of these ongoing issues is rising – both domestically and internationally – in homes, in communities, within and between countries.

However, the amazing women we all support continue to persevere and make academic progress. Day by day, class-by-class, semester-by-semester they continue to work long hours as they balance the rigors of post-secondary education with their need to care for and financially provide for their families. They also manage to lead in their communities via student and nonprofit organizations.

These women are working towards degrees that will better prepare their families and communities for future pandemics including:

  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Environmental Health Sciences
  • Applied Computing
  • Business Administration
  • Accounting and Finance
  • Journalism

We opened up applications for 2023 scholarships and almost half of the applicants noted that COVID-19 and related public health issues significantly impacted their educational journeys. Confounding these issues, many of these women (34%) were single mothers. Many were impacted by domestic violence as well as both domestic (within country) conflict and international conflict. Discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, and political orientation continues to frustrate and challenge these women. Unfortunately, COVID-19 exacerbated these many issues, and the recovery that was hoped for has not yet appeared.

However, the amazing women we all support are showing us that day-by-day, individual-by-individual, we can persevere and make the world a better place despite all of these challenges.

Help us continue to support these amazing women around the world who are showing us all what is possible with determination and with a supportive community cheering them/us on!
