By Anjana Sakya | Executive Director, HimRights
The process of recovery has been difficult for the millions of people who have been displaced due to full or partial destruction of their homes. The day after the first major earthquake in April, HimRights began distributing relief materials. We have reached many of the victims from seven of the most affected districts who did not have access to government facilities: Lalitpur, Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk, Dolkha, Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Makwanpur. Focusing on immediate relief distribution (food supplies, tarpaulins, blankets and medical supplies) during the first few weeks, we are now supporting the reconstruction of permanent homes.
Additionally, HimRights has focused on preventing and responding to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation including sexual and gender based violence of girls and boys in the aftermath of the earthquakes, as well as promoting the psychosocial wellbeing of children in partnerships with Plan Nepal and Clowns without Borders. We have established 3 Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in Lubhu and Siddhipur of Lalitpur where 530 children became part of trauma healing, psychosocial counseling, and engaged in different learning processes. CFS provides a safe place for children where they can divert their mind and have a sense of relief from anxiety and fear, offering them the opportunity to participate in activities such as painting, drawing, coloring, playing games, and singing, as well as learn about their rights and protections. Along with these activities, Free Health Camp was also organized to provide health check-up services for the children participating in CFS.
HimRights continues to work to strengthen survivor-centered multi-sectoral services and referral systems to respond to gender-based violence, local government issue prioritization and budgeting, and other awareness programs organized at community levels in Lubhu, Siddhipur, Dandathowk, Patichaur, and Lamatar. The objective of organizing awareness programs is to share knowledge with the communities on women's and child’s rights, especially in a crisis situation. During these programs information on health, sanitation and precautions to be followed during an earthquake was also provided.
Thank you all so much for your support. Please continue to help us as we help the families in Nepal who are currently in such great need.
Namaste.
