The activities of the "Remote Communities Health Promotion Project," funded by the GlobalGiving crowdfunding platform, continued throughout November. Community Health Workers (CHWs) engaged with the most vulnerable populations in Kitta a small community in Ekondo TiTi in the Ndian Division of the SouthWest region of Cameroon, by providing essential primary healthcare services. Activities included the treatment of uncomplicated malaria and diarrhea, referrals for complicated cases, screening children under 5 years for malnutrition, and referring high-risk pregnant women to health facilities for antenatal care. Additionally, they provided maternal kits and conducted health sensitization sessions. Other services offered during the month included treatment for minor skin infections and the distribution of Ferrous Folate to pregnant women. This report outlines the achievements from this period, the challenges faced, and the action plan for the upcoming month.
A notable case in early November involved Emmanuel, a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with severe malaria. Before the CHW visit, he experienced recurrent nighttime fever spikes, vomiting, severe body weakness, and anemia. His grandmother had been managing his symptoms with locally sourced herbs, unable to afford a visit to the health facility for proper care. Although this method provided temporary relief, it was not sufficient. During a CHW home visit, Emmanuel was evaluated and diagnosed with severe malaria. The CHW administered first aid treatment and referred him to the Ekondo Titi District Hospital for comprehensive care. Upon arrival, Emmanuel's hemoglobin level was below 5. He received complete treatment with injectable artesunate and soon recovered. His family and the Ekondo Titi community expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the GlobalGiving crowdfunding platform for the life-saving assistance provided to them.
This month's main challenge was poor communication with CHWs due to faulty network connections. Moving forward, the plan includes continuing to provide healthcare services to vulnerable individuals, conducting health promotion sensitization, screening for severe acute malnutrition, preparing and submitting monthly reports to GlobalGiving, and ensuring proper compensation for CHWs.
