This project will help 360 vulnerable children under six years of age in Rwamagana District, Rwanda, access safer, inclusive early learning, nutrition support, and responsive care. It will construct and equip two community-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, train caregivers and parents, support six parent savings groups, raise community awareness, and strengthen local ownership so children can learn, grow, and prepare for school with dignity.
For many young children in Rwamagana District, Rwanda, the first years of life are shaped by long distances to ECD services, under-resourced facilities, limited early stimulation, and household economic pressure. Malnutrition and stunting can restrict physical and cognitive development, while parents and caregivers often lack practical support in nutrition, hygiene, child protection, and responsive caregiving. Without action, children may begin primary school unprepared.
The project will construct and equip two community-based ECD centers with classrooms, sanitation, water systems, and learning materials. It will provide six months of porridge ingredients and snacks, train 12 caregivers in inclusive, child-centered methods, engage parents in nutrition and responsive care, support six savings groups with start-up capital, and involve community volunteers and local authorities in awareness, monitoring, and center management.
The project will create lasting community structures around early childhood development. Children will have more consistent access to safe learning and nutrition support; parents will strengthen caregiving knowledge and household resilience; caregivers and committees will improve service quality and accountability. Formal handover to Rwamagana District in Rwanda, quarterly monitoring, an endline evaluation, and community ownership will help sustain the centers beyond the grant period.
