Since debuting the Vision Zero Toolkit at the Silicon Valley Bike Summit August 26, 2015, we, alongside our partners at California Walks, have been spreading the word and educating public officials via presentations and meetings. We’ve delivered 18 presentations throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties and are constantly planning and organizing more. Outreach is the first step in communicating the problems and potential solutions to stakeholders.
Vision Zero San José: In 2015, the City of San José announced its Vision Zero plan. San José found that 3% of its roadway network accounts for 50% of the city’s fatal crashes and decided to focus on these as the city’s 14 Safety Priority Streets. Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition has been working with City of San José and California Walks to help with Safety Priority Streets audits, community outreach and education, and development of a two-year implementation plan. Throughout January and February, SVBC staff has been conducting corridor studies on these priority streets to help city staff determine the best safety improvements that can be made. We will continue doing local level outreach to the people who live in these corridors. By September, our team of safety experts will produce a two-year action plan for San Jose’s Vision Zero implementation. The document will clearly outline strategies and milestones to guide the city’s efforts through 2018.
Sunnyvale: Following SVBC outreach to city staff, elected leaders, and the public, a Sunnyvale Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee recommendation to make Vision Zero an official study topic has moved forward. The City will evaluate the steps and resources needed to develop a Vision Zero Plan.
We are also working with several other cities to determine the next best steps for them to pursue safety policies and goals. We will continue to bring attention to Vision Zero as a solution to eliminating traffic deaths and major injuries in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.
