On 7 Oct 2023 at about 11am local time, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 40km west of Herat City (western Afghanistan). The aftershocks and new shocks have occurred since in neighboring Badghis and Farah provinces. Initial assessments and reports indicate that around 2500 people have been killed across 8 villages in Zindajan district, Herat Province - Mahal Wardkah, Dasht Hows, Bahadorzai, Zoryan, Koshkak, Sar Boland, Sanjab, and Hilalzai. Emergency services are required to support victims.
As per confirmation of CNN this has been the 3rd powerful quake in Afghanistan since beginning of 2023. Herat city is the third largest city of Afghanistan, which is badly affected by the earthquake. Images showed massive heaps of debris after buildings collapsed. The death toll may rise further as due to lack of equipment those stuck in the rubbles cant be rescued on time. Majority of those killed and injured are women and children, since would usually would remain at home as men would go out.
It is anticipated that between 600-800 families have been affected, and nearly 9000 injured. The project will provide essential support to those in need. AfD will undertake a humanitarian relief efforts, supply of medical kits, mobile clinic, as well food and drinking water assistance. It is recommended to provide support on the priority needs which include food and non food assistance, emergency healthcare and WASH support, including hygiene kits.
During this dire economic and hunger crisis that devastates the country's population, these sudden disasters further cripple the economic situation leaving thousands of families with limited surviving options for upcoming winter. This project will support those who lost their homes with essential necessities. We aim to provide people in dire need with possible solutions to overcome the difficulties and further survive the crisis.
