Following confirmed Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, children and vulnerable communities face growing risk. The outbreaks involve the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which currently has no approved vaccine or treatment. UNICEF is working with governments and partners to contain transmission, provide lifesaving supplies, support frontline responders and protect children and families in affected and at-risk communities.
Children and vulnerable communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda face increased risk from Ebola outbreaks linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or treatment. Insecurity, displacement, limited humanitarian access and population movement heighten the risk of transmission and disrupt essential health, nutrition, education and protection services.
UNICEF is supporting outbreak response efforts by delivering infection prevention supplies, deploying emergency response teams, strengthening risk communication and community engagement, and providing technical, operational and staffing support. UNICEF is also working with governments, WHO and Africa CDC to help contain transmission and protect children and families.
Flexible funding enables UNICEF to respond quickly to evolving outbreaks while strengthening community resilience. Support helps protect children from disease, maintain access to essential services and improve preparedness for future health emergencies, reducing risks for vulnerable communities over the long term.
