WarAffected Youth: Activities Jan-May2025

By Alexander Kholmakov | Project Manager

Report on Program Activities
January 15 – May 25, 2025

1. Program Overview
Between January 15 and May 25, 2025, CF “Chance to Change” rolled out a multi-faceted support program for orphans and other vulnerable Ukrainian children affected by the war. Our work—situated at the Stara Basan boarding school (Chernihiv Oblast) and at social support centers in Kyiv—blended psychological education, career guidance, and social integration. By offering emotional tools, professional insights, and community-building activities, we aimed to help young participants recover from trauma, build resilience, and imagine a hopeful future.

2. Participant Profile
We enrolled 63 children from diverse backgrounds. Social categories included 22% internally displaced persons (IDPs), 20% from families facing difficult circumstances, 18% children of activeduty or fallen service members, 16% under formal guardianship, 15% from large families, 5% with disabilities, 2% survivors of violence, and 2% raised by single parents. Ages ranged from 9 to over 17 years: 27% were 9–13, 48% were 14–16, and 25% were 17 and above. This mix enabled us to tailor sessions to varying needs and stages of development.

3. Activities Conducted
From January 15 to May 25, 2025 (131 days, or about 19 weeks), we maintained a steady rhythm of sessions across three groups. In Group 1 (Kyiv), 20 participants met twice weekly—one lecture and one practical workshop—totaling 38 sessions and 760 visits. Group 2 (Kyiv), with 23 children, followed the same schedule for 38 sessions and recorded 874 visits. Group 3 (Stara Basan) included 20 young people who met once weekly in combined sessions, completing 19 meetings and contributing 380 visits. Altogether, we delivered 95 sessions and welcomed 2,014 participant visits.

Each gathering featured interactive exercises to build emotional resilience, stress-management skills, self-regulation, and positive communication. To deepen individual support, we also offered one-on-one consultations with professional psychologists. To encourage active participation, children earned “chances” for engagement and homework completion, redeemable for rewards like recreational outings and small gifts.

4. Program Components
4.1 Psychological Education
Led by professional psychologists, our workshops mixed brief lectures with interactive activities drawn from a custom workbook. Children explored emotion recognition, stress relief techniques, and peaceful conflict-resolution skills, boosting their well-being and selfconfidence.

4.2 Career Guidance
In partnership with local businesses in IT, retail, and small enterprises, we organized three career orientation events. These gatherings offered handson insights into various professions, helping participants identify interests and set clear future goals.

4.3 Cultural & Recreational Activities
To strengthen social bonds and provide joyful breaks, we arranged outings to the cinema, rollerskating rinks, climbing gyms, and local cafés. These activities fostered teamwork and lifted spirits.

4.4 Nutritional & Material Support
Every session began with a healthy snack. In Kyiv, two cohorts consumed 1,634 snacks (20 children × 38 sessions and 23 children × 38 sessions), while Stara Basan enjoyed 380 snacks over 19 meetings.

4.5 Gender Equality & Inclusion
Our inclusive approach guaranteed equal participation of girls and boys and encouraged girls to explore nontraditional fields. We prioritized children with disabilities, IDPs, and ethnic minorities to ensure full access to all activities.

5. Outcomes
Reach: 63 children participated in 95 sessions and 2,014 visits.
Nutrition: 2,014 snacks served.

Qualitative Highlights::

  • 63 participants across Kyiv and Chernihiv

  • 95 total sessions

  • 2,014 participant visits
