Blue Cross Ukraine works in one of the poorest areas of Mariupol and continues to provide shelter, food and support to the local community even during the war. Similarly, the Blue Cross organizations in neighboring countries are setting up their services to reach the Ukrainian refugees crossing the borders. Please support the Blue Crosses in the region to continue services especially in the homeless shelters, for kids and for young people to receive support at these difficult times.
Mariupol is located at the far east of Ukraine and has been one of the first cities affected by the Russian invasion in February 2022. The civil society, especially the most vulnerable ones like children, elderly and poor people are affected by war and need support in order to cater for their basic needs and to cope with the stressful situation. War has made more people homeless. Blue Crosses extend their support locally in the city of Mariupol and to the refugees in neighbouring countries.
Blue Crosses have special know-how to support people who experience tough life situations and prevent them from social exclusion. They provide shelter, food, counselling, and mutual and self-help groups to overcome their traumas and challenges. Blue Crosses have the skills to promote public health by supporting behaviours that prevent harm and prevent people from alcohol and other drug use and addiction.
Blue Crosses are rooted in the local community and support will be available also in the future. After responding to basic needs, support will channel to tackling homelessness and developing behaviors and perspectives that support people to a healthy fulfilling life. It is difficult to state how many people we will reach but Blue Crosses are committed to this work and we expand the service to Ukrainian refugees in Eastern European Blue Cross countries depending on the availability of funds.
