Your support has paved the way for great successes in Uganda this year

We have had a tremendous year.

As you know, in 2017 we leveraged our work and connections in Rwanda, and expanded into Uganda. With Elizabeth Nakato, our Country Director at the helm, we have already accomplished amazing things and reached hundreds of residents who are hungry for the resources we provide.

Here is a glimpse of our work over the past several months that was made possible with your generous help and support.

Refugee Camps
We are currently working in 2 refugee camps, Nakivale in the South western part of the country and Adjumani in the North. We will be doing a needs assessment in the next few months to see how we may be of help at Kyaka 11 Refugee Settlement as well.

Partnerships

We have officially become partners with Seed Effect, a micro finance organization that works in the Northern Refugee camps of the country as their Entrepreneurship Training partner.
We have begun partnering with the Youth Refugee Empowerment Community (YREC), a group that works with the youth in the refugee camps.
We are partnering with Somera Uganda who work with youth with a focus on residents in the slums around Kampala.
We are now working with the African Dream Initiative, and will soon be working in the high schools they send their students to, broadening our reach dramatically.

With all of these alliances, we have begun to run entrepreneurship workshops both for community members and for their teachers ensuring that this work will continue and will reach the greatest number of people.

More than 300 students thus far, have been exposed to and learned from our From Ideas to Action Curriculum over the last 3 months.

2 schools have begun working with our curriculum.

3 teachers and community organizers have been trained in Kakivale. They will continue to deliver the workshops following the From Ideas to Action curriculum to the larger community in Nakivale.

And we've only just begun!

Your Donation is Having a REAL IMPACT in Uganda!

The more than $10K that we raised through the GlobalGiving platform will be dispersed in October. At that time, Elizabeth Nakato, our Country Director in Uganda will begin holding Workshops for the people in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement located in Southwest Uganda.

The refugee camp is a six-hour drive west of the captial city of Kampala. There are more than 100,000 people in the camp coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Kenya and South Sudan, as all the countries that border Uganda have had conflicts in the last 20 years that sent people fleeing for sanctuary.

What is remarkable about the refugee camps in Uganda in general, is their progressive attitudes. The UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, has praised Uganda for their forward-thinking policies for the more than 500,000 people who temporarily live within their borders. What makes the Uganda model unique is the ability for refugees to work and contribute to the local economy. These settlement communities are also in the minority in that they take in refugees immediately with limited questioning or suspicion.

Imagine for a moment having had to flee your home, your family and neighbors and your livelihood. Imagine what it would mean to be able to be a productive force in your new community after everything else has been lost.

IDEA4Africa will start running Workshops at the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in a few weeks, focusing on the From Ideas to Action curriculum that has inspired and empowered hundreds of others in Sub-Saharan African countries to become vital members of their communities. By teaching about innovative mindsets, we are empowering people to break the cycle of poverty that exists in so many communities.

Elizabeth has reported that the need is overwhelming in the settlement community but that “their hunger for knowledge and hopeful spirit is nothing short of a miracle.”
