An average person can be moved by a 67-mph wind, and an average car can be moved by a 90-mph wind. Typhoon Carina hit the Philippines with 105-145 mph winds in late July 2024. The torrential rains, heightened by the habagat or southwest monsoon, flooded homes and roads, brought landslides and leveled rice paddies. It affected 3.6M individuals, many of them children.
The Foundation’s disaster team, in their mission to bring relief goods as soon as possible, forded seven rivers to reach and establish Tanay, Rizal as a relief center and distribution point. Hearing of this, an Aeta group walked 6 hours to reach Tanay. Aetas, an Indigenous group of small statured, dark-skinned, curly-haired nomadic hunter-gatherers, are considered the first inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago which only a disaster could bring out of the forest.
The ABS-CBN Foundation, with support from its community of donors, spent close to $55,000 as it delivered emergency relief packs (food items, hygiene kit, water, etc.) to 9,590 families and provided hot meals to 2,800 families in 9 provinces as soon as Carina hit. The provinces covered were Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Bukidnon, Manila and the National Capital Region, Batangas, Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, and Oriental Mindoro.
In 2024, four super typhoons hit the Philippines within one month. As such, disaster assistance preparation is a priority, as the country is hit with at least 20 typhoons per year. Pre-positioning of resources and emergency response training continue. It for these reasons that the Foundation strives to strengthen its campaign to assist the most vulnerable, especially the children, for the expected typhoons and other natural disasters that visit the Philippines every year.
The ABS-CBN Foundation, through its Sagip Kapamilya (Hold the Family Close) program, has been helping disaster affected communities for the past 30 years and today, maintains its reputation as the trusted and effective community pillar in times of need.
