Dear Friends,
Greetings from IDEA!
Hope you are safe! We want to thank you for your continued contribution to helping flood-affected people from Kerala. Because of your support, many flood-affected families got some livelihood options and their children could continue education. But just as the situation was getting better, the Coronavirus pandemic hit India, Kerala being one of the worst affected states.
Now once again the underprivileged families who were already reeling under the after-effects of continued floods, have been robbed of their livelihood opportunities by the ongoing pandemic and the necessary subsequent lockdown. While these are turbulent times for people from all walks of life, it is especially harsh for the underprivileged.
Many of these people are daily wage earners who live hand to mouth and are now left jobless due to the shutting down of large parts of the informal and unorganized economy. They do not have enough even for two square meals a day, let alone for medicines and other essentials. Their children are unable to continue their education and if this situation persists, many children will be on the verge of discontinuing their education.
As an immediate response, we started helping such needy families with groceries and other essentials. Due to IDEA’s timely help, the families could stock up on groceries and essentials as per their needs and size of their families. Our efforts are still underway, we are working tirelessly to help more affected families till the economy opens up and they can find jobs and livelihood options again.
Recently, our efforts were featured in a local Kerala newspaper called Kerala Kaumudi. The article talks about how IDEA has helped daily wage earner parents of High School girls in Kerala by transferring cash benefits to the accounts of the students after getting their passbook details from the teachers through WhatsApp. It also mentions how we have extended help to the students during both 2018 and 2019 Kerala floods. The students are thankful for English, Computer classes and co-curricular activities which we could arrange for them with your support!
Friends, the economy has still not opened up and livelihood options for these families are none in sight. There are hundreds of families who need urgent help and while there are many agencies at work, it is not enough yet. Many underprivileged people from flood-hit, corona-hit Kerala need your support even more now. Please continue to support this project so that many families and children don’t go hungry during this pandemic!
