The Bestow Foundation gives the gift of Literacy to children, students and adults - helping them achieve reading success. Teaching mothers, daughters, fathers and sons literacy, digital and life skills is our literary mission. Through the Literacy ROCKS Initiative, this project will impact hundreds of lives, offsetting academic failure by providing books, computers, and critical literacy support services to undereducated and low-income households throughout Illinois. Give the gift of Literacy!
The risks to those who cannot read or can barely read are catastrophic as more than 2 million Illinois adults lack the basic reading, math, and writing skills needed to function effectively at home, at work and in the community. Lower literacy skills equal a lower quality of life, poverty and more limited employment opportunities. This project will have a powerful ripple effect by helping 100 adolescents and adults in distressed and disadvantaged Illinois communities achieve reading success.
The Bestow Foundation fulfills the promise of a basic human right: the right to read, write and interpret the world. This project addresses the literacy needs of adolescents and adults, teaching them to read and write and equipping them with critical skills needed to become productive family members, employees, and citizens. Learners will experience the joy of learning to read and comprehend something they have never been able to read before. This leads to increased confidence and fulfillment.
This literacy project will have an amazing ripple effect on the lives of 100 learners. When individuals learn to read, write, do basic math, and use computers, they have the power to lift themselves out of poverty, find and keep sustainable employment, and ultimately change their lives as well as those within their social network. Teaching people to read and write is to empower them with skills that many of us take for granted. When each one teaches one, the world becomes a richer place for all.
