Pride is one of the most visible expressions of the freedoms that underpin democratic societies: the freedom to gather, assemble and peacefully protest.
Every Pride march is a reminder that democratic freedoms are not guaranteed. They depend on people showing up, participating, and protecting their human rights.
Europe’s freedoms are at risk
Across Europe, Pride events are increasingly facing restrictions, political hostility and defunding. Just last weekend in Serbia, a Pride march was banned in the city of Pirot, despite legal notice and warnings about death threats against activists. In Romania, local authorities are not allowing the Oradea Pride march to go ahead for the fourth year running, a deliberate attack on freedom of assembly. Last month, police detained 65 activists at Istanbul Pride.
Restrictions on the freedom to gather and protest can be warning signs that wider democratic freedoms are under pressure, putting everyone, not just LGBTI people, at risk. That’s why we’re taking action with our campaign ‘Protect Pride. Protect Democracy.’
We're calling on the European Commission to help protect Pride, and the freedoms that make it possible. We need your voice to demand that the European Union clearly monitor, publicly rebuke, and financially penalise any Member State that attempts to restrict Pride. Sign the Open Letter today.
Thank you!
ILGA-Europe’s work to protect Prides and stand with frontline activists across the region is possible thanks to supporters like you. Thank you for being a changemaker and part of our journey towards a world where each and every LGBTI person lives in safety and freedom.
