Support the Deaf, One Brick at a Time

Over the past reporting period, the Support the Deaf, One Brick at a Time project has continued to make steady progress toward improving the dignity, safety, and inclusion of Deaf individuals and families. Through community engagement and needs assessments, we identified Deaf persons living in highly vulnerable conditions, including unsafe housing and limited access to basic services. Our team worked closely with Deaf community members using sign language to ensure their voices guided the process. This phase focused on groundwork—verifying beneficiaries, strengthening local coordination, and preparing resources—while also continuing awareness sessions on disability rights and inclusion. Each interaction reaffirmed the urgent need for safe shelter and long-term support, and highlighted the resilience of the Deaf community when given accessible opportunities. These steps have laid a strong foundation for the next stages of construction and support, ensuring that every brick placed truly contributes to stability, independence, and hope.

Background

The Deaf Welfare Awareness Foundation (DWAF) is dedicated to creating inclusive educational and vocational opportunities for the Deaf community in Pakistan. Deaf individuals face immense barriers in accessing quality education, skills training, and dignified employment. With limited institutional support, many remain marginalized and excluded from mainstream society.

To address this gap, DWAF launched the project “Support the Deaf, One Brick at a Time”, aimed at constructing a purpose-built Deaf Education & Training Center. This center will provide specialized classrooms, training spaces, and skill-development labs, empowering Deaf youth to achieve independence and contribute meaningfully to society.

Progress So Far

We are pleased to share that the project has already made significant headway:

• Land Acquisition Completed – Through the generous support of donors, we have successfully secured land for the construction of the center. This milestone represents nearly 50% of the journey completed.

• Community Mobilization – Awareness campaigns, fundraising drives, and stakeholder meetings have helped build momentum and attract both individual and institutional interest.

• Partnerships & Outreach – Engagement with corporate donors, philanthropists, and international supporters (via the GlobalGiving platform) has laid a strong foundation for sustained backing.

• Next Phase: Construction

• With the land secured, the next and most critical step is the construction of the center. The planned facility will include:

  • Classrooms tailored for Deaf students with accessible layouts.

  • A Graphic Design & Digital Skills Lab to equip students with modern, employable skills.

  • Vocational training spaces for technical education.

  • A community hall for events, awareness programs, and advocacy initiatives.

  • Accessible infrastructure, ensuring a barrier-free learning environment.                                        Impact of the Project

    Once completed, this center will:

    • Provide quality education and training to over 500 Deaf students annually.

    • Empower students with marketable skills in IT, digital design, and vocational fields.

    • Create pathways for employment and entrepreneurship within and beyond Pakistan.

    • Serve as a hub of advocacy for Deaf rights and inclusion.

    • Strengthen community integration and reduce long-term poverty by empowering families of Deaf individuals.

    This project resonates strongly with national and international priorities for inclusive education, SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

    Recent success stories highlight the long-term value of such initiatives. For example, Sapphire Textiles, one of our previous partners, has employed more than 50 Deaf individuals in 2025 alone—a direct impact of awareness and community outreach facilitated by DWAF.
