This project funds the work of 11 ordinary South African women as they house, educate, and nourish 880 of Cape Town's poorest and most vulnerable children. Every donation not only provides for the daily needs of these children directly, but also facilitates CHOSA's grassroots, bottom-up approach to community development by providing capacity-building services to each partner project. Donate today to join these trailblazing women as they carry out their vision to end child poverty in Cape Town.
1 in 5 South African children (around 3.7 million total) is orphaned, most having lost their parents to HIV/AIDS. Moreover, one in 3 South African children have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse. In these cases, when living with a parent is not an option, many children are forced to go hungry and drop out of school. Often, when outsiders bring funding to address this, the community's voice is drowned out by the funder's. CHOSA strives to change that by empowering grassroots solutions.
CHOSA partners with 11 grassroots child-focused projects in Cape Town's most under-resourced townships and shack settlements. We fund the daily operating costs of children's homes (orphanages and foster homes), community daycares/preschools, after-school programs; and more. Specifically, we provide housing, food, school fees, educational supplies, pre-school teacher salaries, and more, serving 880 orphaned and vulnerable children in a way that is empowering and sustainable.
This project will give 880 vulnerable children everything they need to finish school and rise out of poverty. Even more importantly, the visionary women in charge of each children's home and educational center we serve will receive capacity-building services and training to ensure that their projects continue to grow, thrive, and serve even more children. In this way, CHOSA not only uplifts one group of children, but works to confront the very forces that reproduce poverty across generations.
