Removing Barriers to Keep Students Learning

January–April 2026 Project Update

Thank you for helping vulnerable students in rural Cambodia stay connected to school. For many children, the risk of dropping out does not begin with one dramatic event. It often starts with everyday barriers: no study materials, a long or unsafe journey to school, family hardship, or limited awareness of how to keep children protected and learning.

From January to April 2026, your support helped This Life respond early. We combined practical help for students with school-based training, community awareness, and coordination with local partners so that children are supported not only in the classroom, but also by the families, schools, and communities around them.

This reporting period, your generosity helped make the following possible:

  • 15 students facing immediate barriers received direct education support. This included 9 students who received study materials, including 4 girls and 1 student with a disability, and 6 students who received bicycles, including 2 girls and 2 students with disabilities. These bicycles help make the journey to school safer, easier, and more regular.
  • 560 students, including 304 girls, joined school-based training sessions on child protection, gender equality, and preventing gender-based violence. These sessions help students better understand their rights, safety, and the importance of respectful and inclusive learning environments.
  • 374 community members, including 194 females, took part in awareness activities promoting children’s learning, positive parenting, child protection, gender-based violence prevention, and climate resilience. These activities help families and communities recognise risks earlier and take shared action to keep children learning.
  • 724 coordination meeting participants, including 441 females and 6 people with disabilities, strengthened local collaboration. These meetings brought together schools, local authorities, government departments, education NGOs, and development partners to improve communication, identify student needs, and coordinate support more effectively.

In total, the project recorded 575 student-focused supports and training participations during this period, including 310 girls and 3 students with disabilities.

Why does this matter? A bicycle can mean a child arrives at school regularly instead of staying home. Study materials can help a student participate with confidence. Training and awareness sessions help teachers, students, families, and community leaders recognise risks before a child leaves school.

The challenge remains significant. Many families in rural communities continue to face financial pressure, and girls and students with disabilities may face additional safety, access, and inclusion barriers. That is why this project does more than provide materials. It strengthens the protective network around each child so that responsibility for keeping children in school is shared.

Looking ahead, we will continue identifying students most at risk of dropping out, especially those who need transport, learning materials, family support, or safer learning conditions. We will also keep working with schools, local authorities, government departments, education NGOs, and development partners to respond earlier and more effectively.

Thank you for standing with students in Cambodia. Your generosity is helping children stay in school, stay protected, and keep moving toward a better future, one student, one classroom, and one community at a time.
