Since its establishment in 2015, Sunrise NGO has been a steadfast advocate for children, recognizing early on that they are among the most vulnerable groups affected by war and displacement. From the very beginning, Sunrise dedicated itself to restoring joy, safety, and learning for children, starting with a simple yet powerful act: celebrating the birthdays of children who had returned from captivity under ISIS. These early celebrations marked the first steps in helping them reclaim their childhoods.
Over the years, this initiative has evolved into a vital program, a healing space where children can play, learn, and rebuild their confidence in a nurturing environment. One recent and deeply touching story from our Safe Space captures the very heart of what Sunrise stands for.
A 10-year-old girl, whose family endured unimaginable suffering under ISIS, is now an active participant in our Safe Space. Her mother is a survivor, while her father and brother remain in ISIS captivity. Tragically, there is still uncertainty about whether they are alive. Despite this profound loss and hardship, this young girl has shown remarkable resilience.
She currently attends 4th grade and participates enthusiastically in our activities focused on resilience building, Arabic, and English language learning. Before joining the Safe Space, she had very limited exposure to English. Today, she proudly shares:
“Now I know all the basics of English. Before, we didn’t have much time to learn in school. But here, we learn a lot, spend more time practising, and we also play and make friends. It’s fun and it makes me happy.”
Through her time in the Safe Space, she has become more confident in asking questions, expressing herself, and engaging with others. She is no longer withdrawn or silent; instead, she is curious, active, and hopeful.
This Safe Space has not only supported her academic progress but, more importantly, provided a sense of belonging and emotional healing. She is now surrounded by peers who play, learn, and heal alongside her. For a child who has experienced so much pain and uncertainty, Sunrise has become a place of light, growth, and connection.
Her story is just one of many, but it beautifully reflects the mission of Sunrise: to create spaces where children can rediscover their voices, rebuild their lives, and believe in a better future.
