Summary

This project aims to provide safe and reliable drinking water to children in Ortese, a rural community in Benue State North Central Nigeria devastated by conflict and displacement. Currently, children rely on contaminated streams as source of drinking water, putting their health and education at risk due to frequent waterborne diseases. By installing clean water sources, we will protect children's health, support school attendance, and give hope to families rebuilding their lives post conflict.

Challenge

Ortese community in Guma LGA has been devastated by years of violent herder-farmer conflict, forcing families to flee and leaving the community largely deserted and destroyed. Children who remain or have returned now depend on contaminated stream water for drinking and household use. Climate change has worsened flooding and water contamination, increasing outbreaks of diarrhea, cholera, and other waterborne diseases. Without safe water, children's health, education, and survival are at risk

Solution

This project will immediately provide safe, reliable sources of drinking water by installing clean water systems, including boreholes and filtration units, in Ortese community. Regular water testing and maintenance will ensure continued safety. Additionally, the project will promote hygiene through handwashing stations and community education. These actions will drastically reduce waterborne diseases, improve children's health, and support their regular school attendance and overall well-being.

Long-Term Impact

Providing access to clean water will transform lives in Ortese by improving child health, reducing waterborne disease-related deaths, enabling children to return to school, and supporting families to rebuild their lives after conflict. Community-led water management will strengthen resilience, promote peacebuilding, and support long-term recovery in Guma. Safe water will also reduce women and children's burden of traveling long distances to unsafe water sources, fostering dignity and stability.
