Safe Water for Displaced Kids in Northern, Nigeria

During our recent community assessment in Ortese, our field team set out to better understand the community's recovery following years of conflict. While we witnessed remarkable resilience, one issue emerged consistently through conversations with parents, teachers, and community leaders: access to safe drinking water has become one of the community's greatest challenges.

Our team observed children collecting water from muddy, contaminated streams because there are simply no safe alternatives. Recent heavy rainfall and flooding across Benue State have further polluted these water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and placing an even greater burden on already vulnerable families.

Yet amid these challenges, we encountered something equally powerful—hope. Despite everything they have endured, the people of Ortese remain determined to rebuild their lives. Parents continue striving for a better future for their children, and community leaders remain committed to restoring stability and dignity. Their resilience has strengthened our commitment to stand alongside them.
