For families in Benue State, Nigeria, this global statistic is not distant—it’s their daily reality.
Years of violent conflict have destroyed water infrastructure in communities like Ortese, forcing children and families to rely on contaminated streams for drinking water. Every sip exposes them to life-threatening diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid—diseases that claim hundreds of thousands of lives each year and keep children out of school
But this crisis is preventable. By investing in clean water systems and hygiene education, we can dramatically reduce illness, improve school attendance, and restore community resilience. UNICEF and WHO emphasize that safe water is not a luxury—it’s a human right, yet millions remain marginalized, especially in fragile rural areas like Benue
