Children Need Clean Water Before the Next Outbreak

By Jackson Ameh | Project Leader

RCurrently in Ortese, Guma LGA, children are forced to drink from contaminated streams. Years of conflict have destroyed much of the area’s water infrastructure, and climate-driven floods continue to worsen the problem by spreading pollution and debris into the only available sources. This crisis is not just an inconvenience—it is a matter of life and death.

According to recent reports from UNICEF, as of June 2025, Nigeria has recorded 3,109 suspected cholera cases and 86 deaths across 34 states. The most vulnerable are children, with 80,000 at high risk due to the ongoing heavy rains and poor sanitation. In Benue’s internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, the situation is particularly dire: 76% of households say they have difficulty accessing water, 51% rely on unsafe sources such as streams, and 100% report having no purification tablets to make their water safe. These statistics underscore the extreme risk of waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea.

But there is hope. Your support can make an immediate, tangible difference. By helping us install boreholes and filtration systems in Ortese, you provide families with access to clean, safe water. Regular water quality testing and hygiene education will further help to prevent outbreaks of disease, reduce days missed from school, and ensure children have the opportunity to grow up healthy.

Access to clean water is not just a basic necessity—it is a matter of survival for Ortese’s children. Will you help us deliver this essential resource before the peak rainy season threatens even more lives?
