Progress Report

By Jackson Ameh | Project Leader

Project Update

We are pleased to provide an update on the progress of the "Safe Water for Displaced Kids in Northern Nigeria" project. While we are currently in the preliminary phase and actively mobilizing resources to fully implement the project, we have undertaken several important preparatory activities to position it for successful execution once funding is secured.

Progress Made to Date Community Engagement and Needs Assessment

GoGreen has maintained regular engagement with community leaders, women groups, youth representatives, and displaced families in the Ortese Community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. Through these consultations, we have continued to validate the urgent need for safe and reliable drinking water, particularly for children and vulnerable households affected by years of violent conflict and displacement.

The assessments confirmed that many households continue to rely on unsafe surface water sources, exposing children to waterborne diseases and other health risks. Community members have expressed strong support for the proposed intervention and have committed to participating in project implementation and maintenance activities.

Stakeholder Mobilization

We have initiated discussions with local authorities, community development committees, and relevant stakeholders to establish partnerships that will support the sustainability of the project. Preliminary plans have been developed for community-led water management structures that will oversee future borehole maintenance and ensure equitable access to water resources.

Project Planning and Technical Preparation

The project team has completed initial planning activities, including:

  • Identification of priority locations for proposed borehole construction and rehabilitation.
  • Preliminary mapping of potential beneficiaries.
  • Development of implementation and community engagement strategies.
  • Preparation of project communication and fundraising materials.
  • Exploration of technical partnerships for future water infrastructure development.

Resource Mobilization and Fundraising

A significant focus during this reporting period has been resource mobilization. The project was launched on the GlobalGiving platform to expand visibility and attract potential donors and partners. We have also shared the project concept with prospective supporters, philanthropic organizations, and networks interested in humanitarian response, child protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives.

Although funding has not yet been secured, these efforts have increased awareness of the challenges faced by conflict-affected children in Ortese and have generated valuable interest in the project.

Challenges

The primary challenge remains the lack of sufficient funding to start infrastructure development. Ongoing humanitarian and development funding constraints globally have slowed the pace of resource mobilization. Nevertheless, community interest and stakeholder commitment continue to be strong.

Next Steps

Upon securing the required funding, GoGreen will immediately begin the following:

  • Detailed technical assessments and borehole siting.
  • Construction and rehabilitation of community water facilities.
  • Installation of hand pumps and water access points.
  • Hygiene promotion and safe water education activities.
  • Formation and training of committees for community water management.
  • Monitoring and evaluation activities to track project outcomes and impact.

Looking Ahead

Despite being in the preparatory phase, this project continues to build momentum through community engagement, stakeholder collaboration, and fundraising efforts. The need for safe drinking water in Ortese remains urgent, and we remain fully committed to transforming donor support into sustainable access to clean water for conflict-affected children and families.

We are grateful to GlobalGiving and its supporters for providing a platform that helps bring visibility to this critical need. We look forward to sharing further progress as we move closer to implementation.
