Hope and Renewal in Masisi

By PASCAL NIYONZIMA | CORDINATOR

Project Summary

The “Support Returnees in Masisi, North Kivu Today” project aims to assist families who fled the conflict in Masisi and sought refuge in Goma. As they return to their devastated villages, most find themselves without food, shelter, or basic means of survival. This initiative provides direct and immediate support to help them rebuild their homes, restart agricultural activities, and regain long-term stability.

Context and Rationale

The crisis in Eastern DRCongo has caused massive displacement. Families returning to Masisi face destroyed homes, abandoned fields, and the total loss of their belongings. Their current situation is extremely fragile:

  • no resources to restart farming,
  • no building materials to reconstruct homes,
  • high risk of hunger and malnutrition,
  • increased vulnerability among children and the elderly.

Given the urgency, coordinated humanitarian assistance is essential to support their return and recovery.

Project Objectives

  1. Provide immediate life-saving support through food distribution.
  2. Restart agricultural activities by supplying seeds and small livestock.
  3. Support the reconstruction of homes through essential materials.
  4. Restore dignity and self-reliance among returning households.
  5. Strengthen social and economic recovery in Masisi and neighboring areas.

Target Population

The project supports returnee families in Masisi and surrounding villages. Most households are composed of women, children, and vulnerable individuals who lost everything during the conflict.

Planned Activities

  • Distribution of food for immediate survival.
  • Provision of adapted seeds and small livestock.
  • Supply of basic construction materials for house rebuilding.
  • Field follow-up and coaching to relaunch livelihoods.
  • Community mobilization to reinforce solidarity and resilience.

Expected Impact

Over time, this project will:

  • reduce extreme poverty among returnee households,
  • help restart the local economy,
  • strengthen family autonomy,
  • stabilize villages and reduce the risk of further displacement.

By supporting this initiative, donors help restore hope, dignity, and long-term resilience for families striving to rebuild their lives.
