Over five crore elementary school students in India have not attained foundational literacy and numeracy. They can’t read and comprehend basic text and the ability to carry out basic addition and subtraction with Indian numerals. In the current educational system, once students fall behind on foundational literacy and numeracy, they tend to maintain flat learning curves for years, perpetually unable to catch up. For many students, this has become a major reason for not attending school, or for dropping out altogether (NPE, 2019).The number of students falling behind in Indian classrooms is huge. It is extremely difficult for teachers to teach large number of students, covering the mandated curriculum and simultaneously also pay attention to the vast number of students who have fallen behind.
The Patang Remedial Education Programme aims to support school education and effectively minimize student attrition. It does this by creating a remedial education support model functioning within schools.
A Patang centre in a school helps bridge the learning gap among children so that they can reach their age appropriate grade level. Children actively participate in a Patang classroom practicing language skills (LSRW) and gaining a conceptual understanding of mathematics. This daily involvement of 90 minutes helps strengthen their ability be interested in and learn other subjects too in their regular classrooms. This increases their confidence which builds motivation to attend school more regularly.
A model like Patang Remedial Education helps aid this situation by its presence in the school in itsworking hours. The students who struggle to cope in their grade level classrooms enroll in Patang classrooms where they learn at their actual level of learning, progress at their own pace and move to their potential level of learning. This helps them adjust better in their regular classrooms.
