Human rights organizations currently count over 1'400 political prisoners in Belarus. Among them is Ales Bialiatski, Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2022. To campaign for the release of political prisoners, Libereco launched its #WeStandBYyou campaign in 2020. As part of the campaign, over 400 MPs from more than 20 democratic countries have already become a symbolic godparent for a political prisoner. Together with us, they campaign for the release of all political prisoners in Belarus!
After the rigged presidential elections in Belarus in 2020, the human rights situation in Belarus deteriorated: Thousands of people have since been arbitrarily arrested. Currently, human rights organizations count over 1'400 political prisoners. They have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 25 years for protesting, posting on social media or defending human rights. Among them are Ales Bialiatski, Nobel Peace Prize laureate 2022, and Maria Kolesnikova, awardee of the Sakharov Prize 2020.
Our #WeStandBYyou campaign calls for solidarity with all people in Belarus who are committed to free and fair elections, democratization, the rule of law and human rights. As part of the campaign, over 400 Members of 23 parliaments have already become godparents for political prisoners in Belarus and campaign for their release. Help us keep the campaign going, get more Members of Parliament to work for the release of political prisoners, and keep the pressure on the Belarusian regime high.
Human rights defenders in Belarus have either been imprisoned or forced to leave the country. It is therefore crucial to continue their fight for freedom and democracy while the human rights situation further deteriorates.
