This project is finished! Sociedad Peruana de Sindrome Down (SPSD) did a fantastic job implementing it, reaching even more families than planned and receiving excellent feedback from parents who participated in the project. We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who donated and made this project happen, thank you all!
SPSD produced and distributed information kits to 150 families with babies with Down syndrome, with each kit including: a bag with the SPSD logo; leaflets with information about Down syndrome and the rights of people with disabilities; a small book called "Your baby with Down syndrome has been born"; and other materials with information about early development and medical issues associated with Down syndrome. The picture below shows one of the kits.
The meetings were able to reach 49 families in total, 9 more families than planned. Feedback from parents after the meetings was very positive, with key messages including not feeling alone anymore and feeling more secure and confident as parents. A highlight for many parents was meeting young people with Down syndrome, which was described as completely changing their perception of what life for their baby could look like.
Thank you again to everyone who donated this project and helped to make it a great success! You have made a big difference to the lives of young children with Down syndrome in Peru!
