Challenge

Consider the dire reality in Pakistan with regards to Maternal and Infant health: 1) A UNICEF report revealed that Pakistan has the highest Infant Mortality Rate in the world - newborns here face a 1 in 22 chance of dying within a month of birth. 2) Pakistan's Maternal Mortality Rate is 127/100,000 and accounts for 28% of the global total - every 37 minutes, one woman dies giving birth (14,000 woman every year). 80% of Infant deaths and 33% of Maternal deaths in Pakistan are preventable!

Solution

HOPE has been at the forefront of the battle to reduce Maternal and Infant Mortality in Pakistan since 1998. We operate 4 Hospitals and 12 Maternal & Child Health Centers for the poor which treat 800,000 patients annually for free, 70% of whom are women/children. Altogether, 70,000 women are given prenatal care/year at our facilities. Our Hospitals welcome 12,000 newborns via normal birth and 14,000 newborns via cesarean birth each year. 7,000 infants are given neonatal treatment.

Long-Term Impact

HOPE has taken calculated steps to reduce Pakistan's burgeoning MMR and IMR by establishing Hospitals and MCHCs in poor communities and rural/remote areas. These first steps are critical because they pave the way for future growth and poverty alleviation measures in underserved communities. By bringing quality healthcare to underprivileged populations, we are able to build a level of trust which opens the door to Education and Vocational Training - thus a comprehensive plan to end poverty.
