The J&K floods in September 2014 also devastated Hassanpora Tawela Bijbehara village in Anantnag District. Of the 504 households 250 families lost everything as their houses collapsed in the disaster.
Even now, almost a year later many families continue residing in temporary sheds and tents in miserable condition. Recently heavy rainfall again caused water logging bringing more suffering for these affected families. Goonj met the villagers and discussed about participatory support. When the villagers showed interest, with them we explored community issues for phased manner Cloth for Work (CFW) activities.
Around 150 people cleaned the 1.5 kilometer long local water channel; a cesspool of filth, debris and waste materials for years, which was further worsened by the floods. Before the activity Goonj distributed rubber gloves and masks to the villagers. People removed the weeds, wooden logs, plastic waste, household wastage and materials clogging the channel. Around 100 trips of hand wheel carts were needed to carry the waste material to pre-selected place (which will be mud filled). Around 600 bricks and large stones were also removed. The participants got Goonj Family Kit which mainly had - 2 pieces of dari, 1 blanket, 1 shirt, 1 pair of shoes, 5 sachet of shampoo, 1 bottle of hair oil, 5 pieces of batteries, 1 utensil and 1 soap.
