Every year adds new dimension of fury to devastation caused by floods in India. While the country hasn't yet recovered fully from Uttarakhand & Odisha floods last year, this year in addition many parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Assam & most recently Jammu & Kashmir have also been engulfed in flood waters. People are faced with death from basic necessities like food, shelter, clothing, clean water, medicines etc. This project will work to reach relief materials to flood affected areas.
FLOODS are annual reality for millions across India. Recent floods in Jammu & Kashmir have brought unprecedented destruction in its wake. Over 2 million people have been rendered homeless in parts of Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, U.P & Uttarakhand. Another disaster awaiting flood affected is upcoming winters. Goonj is trying its best to reach out relief in affected areas in phased manner. There is immediate need for relief material like dry ration, blankets, tarpaulins, utensils etc.
"Rahat Floods"(Rahat means relief) will work for recovery & welfare of flood affected. GOONJ will put to work its decade-long experience of disaster relief. We partner with grassroot agencies to give accurate assessment of damage &needs of disaster hit people. Being part of local community, they become crucial leg in distribution chain as they sensitively deal with issue of giving with dignity. Floods have wiped away all that these people had &today they are devoid of even basic amenities.
For GOONJ, distributing relief material is only 1st step. We work for long-term rehabilitation, wherever possible. People have lost everything in floods &they need more than just relief camps to resurrect their lives.Once flood water recede,Goonj engages people in rural belts into rebuilding of local infrastructure, schools under our 'Cloth for Work' initiative. 'Sujni' initiative (blankets/quilts made out of cloth pieces)as income generation initiative has huge scope given its local acceptance.
