In the first of its kind operation, Goonj in partnership with the Indian Army has initiated several welfare activities for communities in far flung villages on the LOC (Rajouri district of J&K). The first was a rural Development Camp cum Agricultural Mela recently organized together with the Nowshera Brigade of Indian Army in Jhangar village. The mela was about imparting knowledge on farming, cattle breeding, social welfare schemes & child development to local farmers. 722 villagers from village Jhangar, Sariya and Sher interacted with experts mainly from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sericulture and Animal husbandry departments and ICDS. Survey of the entire area was carried out with the help of the district administration and Sarpanchs of the villages.
A cleanliness drive was organized within the campus while Goonj provided farming kits (5 Kg of manure and 500 gm of weedicide, sufficient for 5 kanals of farming land) to 500 people as they cleaned a road patch of approximately 1.5 kms in village Jhangar under “Cloth for Work (C4W)”. These kits will aid in a better yield of maize, the main crop of this season. Goonj will be working closely with the Indian army to further address the needs of these village communities..
