New chances for survivors of human trafficking

By Oana Marchis | Program Manager

We are currently working with 10 survivors in the counties of Cluj and Alba in Northwest Romania, mostly women that have been sexually exploited in their own communities and abroad. We are working closely with another Non-Governmental Organization who is working solely on assisting victims of the human trafficking and who plans on opening a shelter for our survivors. Our objective is to find a long term solution for them to be able to rebuild their lives.

Some highlights of the previous reporting period are as follows:

  • 2 survivors received legal and psychological assistance in court hearing
  • 1 survivor received social assistance, for herself and her newborn child
  • 1 survivor received assistance in job hunting
  • 1 survivor got hired by a factory in Cluj
  • 1 survivor received medical assistance
  • 4 survivors received psychological counseling
  • 1 survivor received vocational counseling
  • 2 survivors received a bartender/waitress professional training
  • 1 survivor received a paid lawyer in order to obtain moral damage money
  • 1 survivor was helped to get in touch with her mother and to solve legal issues regarding her residence at a shelter
  • We have had a meeting with a company in the USA regarding products that survivors can create and how they could sell them in the United States in order to sustain the financial independence of the survivors
  • We encouraged entrepreneurs to employ vulnerable girls, by providing them with small grants, with the help of HERA Foundation in UK

We are working closely with other organizations from Romania and from the main destination countries and we are constantly looking for opportunities and resources to help the survivors regain their independence.

Thank you so much for all of your support. Each and every one of you is an integral part of the team working to help our survivor community access justice and claim their human rights.

If you’d like to continue regularly supporting this program, we encourage you to utilize the recurring donation option on our global giving project page. You’re monthly support would be very much appreciated. Engaging in human trafficking issues is extremely important, either in your own community or here in Romania.
