This project aims to provide treatment for 1045 thalassemia patients across Sindh province. Each patient needs a blood transfusion every 2 weeks, leading to high levels of iron in their body. Iron chelation therapy once a month is essential to manage iron overload, a common complication of the disease. This therapy helps prevent organ damage and improves the overall quality of life for patients.
Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder in Pakistan, According to NIH, it affects up to 7% of the population, with over 10 million carriers and 5000 new cases of thalassemia major annually. This condition reduces hemoglobin production, causing anemia. Patients often need regular blood transfusions, leading to iron overload and organ damage such as the heart, liver, and endocrine glands . Iron chelation therapy is used to manage this excess iron, preventing complications.
