Thank you for your continued support & generous donations towards our ongoing projects interacting with children in Tokyo.
With the help of your donations, we had a lot of activities during the past 3 months. I would like to share 3 projects we had on the “Day Of Service” * on October 20th. These projects are called “For the Earth”, “Mini Zoo” and “Fun with Kids”.
For “For the Earth” project we recycled first class hotel amenities (shampoo, conditioner and body gel) refilling them into PET bottles, and put hand-made labels made by kids from children’s homes for their use. 5 children’s homes joined with total 58 of kids with 49 volunteers at 3 locations. After the project, we received thank you letters from kids and one of them wrote that her hair had never felt better or smelled so nicely! Please see attached photos.
“Mini Zoo” project involved visually impaired kids who study English regularly at our English lesson classes to interact with small animals while conversing and practicing their English with our volunteers. 2 groups joined with total 27 of kids with 19 volunteers. We had great feedback from the children, such as their surprise at an animal called Chabo (Japanese bantam). They had never heard of Chabo or much less petted one. Using their sense of touch instead of sight, they were delighted to feel how soft and warm the small animals were. This project was so well received that we hope we can do this again, to provide such a wonderful experience to visually impaired children.
“Field Trip with Kids” project was an outing to the aquarium with children under 3 years old from the infant’s home. Infants living in this facility are brought in immediately after birth for various reasons and when they become
3 years old, are sent to children’s homes or other places if parents cannot live with them. The request from the facility was for the toddlers to have a fun outing so they can have fond memories before they leave for other homes. We (17 infants and 13 volunteers) all had a really enjoyable great day at the aquarium.
*Day of Service (DOS) is held every year with the aim of getting as many volunteers as possible to participate in various volunteer activities.
