This project will provide blood pressure monitors, glucose monitors, routine medications and dialysis support for 200 indigent chronic kidney disease patients in Southern Nigeria, to promote self-monitoring and effective management of hypertension and diabetes.
10% of Nigerians are living with chronic kidney disease and only a tenth of these can sustain the out-of-pocket payment for treatment. Hypertension and diabetes are the leading causes of kidney failure, and responsible for rapid progression of the disease. Kidney failure patients are burdened with the high cost of medications and renal replacement. Majority do not survive beyond three months after onset of dialysis often succumbing to complications of the disease including cardiac deaths.
Providing self-monitoring devices will encourage and equip patients to participate in their care through regular monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar. Providing the indigent patients with their blood pressure medications and anti-diabetic drugs as necessary will significantly contribute towards more effective blood pressure and blood sugar control. Regular dialysis will help to prolong the lives of the patients.
