Support for 25 Helpless Children
March 1st to May 31 2016
Background:
Raksha Nepal has been actively working for women and children for the past 10 years. This organization supports those girls, women and their children who have been through different types of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, polygamy victim, etc.) or who are vulnerable to violence. It also works in favor of the victims to raise their voice to the concerned institutions and help them get justice.
In the same context, since last 7 years, Raksha has established a Child Transit Home for those vulnerable children who have gone through rape, sexual abuse and other different forms of sexual violence. The main objective to keep them in this transit home is to prevent them from following the wrong path, enjoy the basic rights like other normal children and make them capable to fight and protect others from any types of sexual violence. Moreover, these children also get opportunity to make their life better. Raksha Nepal has been trying its best to give a safe and family environment to these vulnerable children, with limited funding source. Currently, it has 30 children in its transit home. RN has been coordinating with different organizations for their secure future.
The support of Global Giving to Raksha Nepal Transit Home children has been very valuable. This support has been towards their schooling and health, which is very important for these children living here.
Final exams and results:
There were 30 children sitting for the final exams in the month of March 2016. Out of thirty children ten got Distinction and rest other twenty secured first Division with good marks. None of them had to repeat in the same class. They are really doing well in their studies. Along with this, they are very good in their extra-curricular activities such as: dancing, singing, painting, yoga and Taekwondo. They regularly practice yoga and Taekwondo in the morning. Among the 30 kids, two of them are in Montessori classes.
Tuition classes
Regular tuition and coaching classes are being provided to all the children in the transit home on different subjects according to their needs. Housemother and other national volunteers help them in their homework and studies.
Psychosocial Health Counseling (Group/individual)
A psychosocial and health counseling is being provided for the children living in the transit home because they already have been tortured or have fallen prey of sexual violence in the past. So, psycho-social counseling is essential for them. Individual and group counseling is provided according to their needs.
Overall group sessions helped children to imagine and to sight the future. They become able to understand how to give respect to themselves by writing good work of each day in a hero book. They could feel that their actions are always important to make their life success. Group counseling session is important to make children understand how important they are for themselves as well as their surroundings. The counseling session makes them to look at their future in positive perspectives. The children have really been benefitted by psychosocial counseling session.
General Health Check-up
Raksha Nepal organized a health check-up and referral for children in various hospitals according to their health condition. Besides that, the nurse pays visit to Raksha Nepal from time to time, who prescribes basic medicine and refer children to hospitals, if needed.
Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities
For alertness of mind and body, RN has been running regular yoga and meditation activities for all the children and others living in its home. Luckily, one Doctor and Yoga expert visited the home and shared knowledge about yoga and its benefits, which has encouraged everyone living here.
Practicing Better English Communication
The medium of instruction in the school is English for the children. They are able to communicate in English. However, for their better communication skills and in order to give exposure with the native speakers, the children join Skype conference weekly with volunteers abroad. From which, have benefited them a lot.
