Angus Gillis’ ethical tourism project is well underway with the establishment and inauguration of the Pro Poor Tourism Project and Mcambele Community Center. The project directly benefits over 750 community members in the rural villages of Kwa Pontak and Kwa Doli in the Eastern Cape through workshops, childcare, training, health services, income-generation and tourism.
The doll-making cooperative, craft stands, leadership training and the establishment of self-help groups have greatly contributed to the improved livelihoods. Community members have seen increased family earnings and empowerment via education and skills training.
The tourism project, created under Angus Gillis’ socio-economic approach, sustainably supports the community by engaging tourists to partake in conservation, traditional indigenous culture and craft production.
Although the project has significantly benefited many community members, support is still needed to maintain ongoing projects as well as to continue the development of individuals within the community.
