Support Elderly Women Living Difficult Environment

Summary

In underserved rural and urban areas, many older women struggle with hunger, poor health, and loneliness. With limited or no source of income, a large number are unable to meet their daily food and healthcare needs. The World Bank reports that more than 45% of people in Tanzania live below the poverty line, with elderly women being among the most vulnerable groups. This initiative aims to support 1,000 elderly women by providing food assistance, essential medical supplies, and small livelihood.

Challenge

Many elderly women in Tanzania lose their spouses and are left without financial support, pensions, or reliable income. Most depend on occasional assistance from relatives or neighbors who are also affected by poverty. As a result, hunger, untreated medical conditions, and social neglect remain widespread. In areas affected by conflict, widows face even greater hardship due to insecurity and lack of resources. Without timely support, many will continue experiencing malnutrition and poor health.

Solution

The project will distribute monthly food packages, healthcare supplies, and livelihood starter kits to 1,000 vulnerable elderly women. Food support will help reduce hunger, while health screenings and medical items will address untreated illnesses. Livelihood kits will enable some beneficiaries to earn modest income through small farming activities or petty trade. By combining emergency assistance with simple income-generating opportunities, the project will improve daily living conditions.

Long-Term Impact

Better access to nutritious food and healthcare services will help elderly women enjoy healthier and longer lives. Livelihood support will allow some beneficiaries to become more self-reliant and less dependent on inconsistent outside assistance. Supporting elderly women also benefits families and communities, as many care for grandchildren and assist neighbors in need. Over time, this project can serve as a sustainable community-based model for elderly support and care.
